Gene Jurewicz, 89, of Clifton, passed away Christmas Eve, Sunday, December 24, 2017. Gene was born in Garfield and resided in Clifton since 1941. He attended Clifton High School and was a member of the Class of 1945. After graduating from Fairleigh Dickenson he served in the United States Army as a Corporal in the 169th Infantry Regiment during the occupation of Germany. After his service in Germany he continued service with the Army Reserve until his Honorable Discharge on November 20, 1956. Gene owned and operated the family butcher shop and grocery store in Passaic until 1960. It was there that he met Marlene whom he married on November 16, 1957. After closing the business Gene put his business, finance and managerial skills to use as an accountant and Controller until his retirement 28 years ago.
Gene was a member of the Holy Name Society at St. Brendan R.C. Church, devoted countless hours to St. Brendan's Church and School, and was one of many who ensured the success of St. Brendan's Bingo from 1962 through 2015. He was a faithful parishioner of St. Paul R.C. Church in Clifton and was an active volunteer over many years for the Multiple Sclerosis Association.
Gene is survived by his beloved wife of sixty years, Marlene (nee Krudys); his sons and their spouses, Mark and his wife Kathleen, Richard and his wife Michele, Thomas and his wife Kathleen, and Robert and his wife Marie; his grandchildren, Joseph, Andrew and his wife Maryellen, James and his wife Marta, Megan Brainerd and her husband Clark, Caitlin, and Patrick; and, his great-granddaughter Elle. Gene is also survived by his sister Phyllis Paparella; a niece, Diane Van Delden and her husband Jay and their children Kyle and Kevin; nephews George Casagrand and his wife Kelly and their children Sara and Emily, Paul Paparella and his wife Kristen, and Michael Paparella and his wife Carolin and their son Grant. He was predeceased by his sister, Rose Casagrand.
Visiting hours will be Thursday, January 4, 2018 from 4 to 8 pm at Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, 1313 Van Houten Avenue, Clifton. Gene's funeral service will be Friday, January 5, 2018 beginning 10:15 am at the funeral home and continuing with an 11:00 am Mass at St. Paul R.C. Church, 124 Union Avenue, Clifton. Entombment to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Paterson.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Paul R.C. Church in his memory.
