John McGowan, 94, of Paterson, died peacefully in his home on Tuesday, August 22, 2017. Born in Passaic, Mr. McGowan resided in the Lakeview Section of Paterson. Before retirement, he was employed as a Field Representative with the United Rubber Workers of America. Previous employment was with U.S. Rubber of Passaic as a timekeeper. Mr. McGowan was a faithful parishioner of St. Brendan R.C. Church in Clifton.
Mr. McGowan was a proud veteran of the United States Navy having been honorably discharged. He served in WWII as a Signalman 2nd Class in the North Atlantic and Pacific Theatre of Operations and saw action in the Battle of Okinawa. He was a member of the American Legion Post 199 of Hawthorne.
Devoted husband and loving father, Mr. McGowan is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Eleanor (nee Kufta); three children, Maureen Brennan and her husband, James of West Chester, PA, John T. McGowan of Clifton, and Denise McGowan-Guida and her husband, Joseph of Clifton; one granddaughter, Kimberly Coleman and her husband, Christopher of Waldwick; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Coleman; and his sister, Dorothy Cauceglia of Wayne. Mr. McGowan was predeceased by his two brothers, Joseph and George McGowan.
Visitation will be held Saturday morning from 9:00 to 10:00 am at Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, 1313 Van Houten Ave., Clifton followed by a 10:30 am Mass at St. Brendan R.C. Church, Lakeview Avenue @ Crooks Avenue in Clifton. Interment will follow at St. Nicholas Cemetery in Lodi. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to your favorite charity.
