Oido M. Gatta, 94, of Clifton, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2018. Born in Villalago, Italy, Mr. Gatta came to the United States in 1951 and first settled in Virginia. He then resided in Paterson for ten years before moving to Clifton 50 years ago. Before his retirement, he was a mason with the International Bricklayers Union Local #4 of Fairfield. He was a talented trombone player and attended music school in Rome while still living in Italy. During World War II, Mr. Gatta served in the Italian military on the Russian Front and became a prisoner of war. Soon after his capture, Mr. Gatta escaped and it took him two years to get home.
Mr. Gatta was a parishioner of St. Andrew the Apostle R.C. Church in Clifton and had been a member of the Roma Club in Paterson.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 61 years, Vincenza (nee DiIanni); two devoted sons, Anthony M. Gatta and his wife, Gina of Wayne and Joseph Gatta and his wife Robbin of Port Washington, NY; and four loving grandchildren, Michael, Brandon, Carissa and Genna.
He was predeceased by her dear sister, Ada Iannessa.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 6 pm at Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, 1313 Van Houten Ave., Clifton. Funeral services will be held Monday 9:15 am from the funeral home followed by a 10:00 am Mass at St. Andrew the Apostle R.C. Church, 400 Mount Prospect Avenue, Clifton. Entombment to follow at East Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clifton.
